Intense shipping fandoms?

What's with people, particularly fan girls obsessing over "ships"? I'm fine with people wanting to pair characters with romantic interests together but why do some obsess over it and take it to a whole new level? I'm talking like Fairy Tail fans wanting to kill each other pairings lol Not just anime but even movies/novels like Harry Potter? If you're gonna "ship" characters together, at least it should be a sensible pairing, for example i can't believe Draco and Hermione is a thing lol in no world does that make sense in either the book or movies

I'm cool with fantasy pairings and can see the fun in it, but damn some people are savages about it, i mean they can write a whole college paper as to why their pairings are valid lol.
