Gilles' legend goes that he obsessed over Joan of Arc. Upon her death he vowed to join her in Hell. Because she was sentenced as a witch he believed the only way to reach the same circle of Hell was to commit sins equal to or greater than hers. So he used his influence as a noble to gather children into his care and then violate them. This went on for years until he thought it time to confess so that he may be put to death by the same Catholic church that sentenced Joan. At no time did Gilles go out to sea as a captain or pirate. Why the name Bluebeard was it came about from an old book wrote later by an author inspired to create a serial killer that used his influence and connections to escape being caught. Gilles was quoted to have been the reference for the character Bluebeard.
