why do they think they can do it? they dont have nearly as much influence as china does, and i doubt their alliance is strong enough to drag china into this mess im positive im missing a lot of core details, but why the hell do they think the other nations are gonna let them just fuck around and take ukraine?

It's a tense situation. Russia has one of the top two nuclear arsenals. Ukraine no longer has nukes as they got rid of there's which I personally think was a mistake. No nuclear weapon nation will go to direct war because of the risk someone will launch them at that point everyone launches. I believe Putin wants to take over a portion of Ukraine because ethnic Russians are there. It's probably just an excuse to expand their territory there.
