One sad thing that happened was earlier in Guts life. He was captured and imprisoned. there was a flower in his cell. A flower spirit appeared to him and helped him survive the night. He was injured and they purposely were not giving him food or water so he'd be weak. That way the king's son could easily kill him for sport. Gut's is open minded but brushes people and other beings off. Yet the flower spirit befriends him. She mentions how she's lonely in the cell all by herself as she only knows the world from inside the cell. She gets happy when the sunlight peers through the cell window. Guts tells her there is a whole field of flowers just like her on a hill outside. she gets excited. He tells her that he'll take her there so she can make friends. Yet Guts is in a lot of pain and very dehydrated. He can barely make it through the night so she uses the leaves of her flower to give him some water. She uses all her power and dies. Guts is really shaken when he wakes up the next morning. He takes the dead flower in his breast pocket anyway and manages to beat the son despite his condition. A band from the mercenary group he was in rescues them and he's able to escape. Guts lays the flower among the other flowers he mentioned on the hill remembering the flower spirit's voice. Lamby! Guts desperately wants to be close to someone. Have actual friends and family yet everyone he's close to has some sort of misfortune. So he remembers his adoptive father saying he is cursed. Casca does gain her memories back later but when she sees Guts she goes into a state of trauma. I don't know what happens then as the author passed away so the fate of Berserk is in limbo. Though I find this is the saddest part of Gut's life. He can only forget his troubles in battle but overall no one can get close to him despite him being a good person. He does make some friends where we currently are that have been able to stick with him but we don't know how that will turn out. Also the mercenary group he was with that Casca was also in was like family to him. Yet he left them and regretted it later. It was over something Griffith said that made Guts feel inadequate.
