well kind of a serious thing on here, I was driving today when the police pulled me over for excess of limit speed, wich was 45mph and I was at 40mph, he asked me if I knew I was passing the speed limit, here on my city is not a good idea to answer them so I just said no I didnt knew, the police told me, you can avoid the ticket if you pay me 100 pesos, what do you say?, I told him no that I wanted the ticket, which he not only didnt gave me but left me.
So my point with that story here on my country bribery is used really often to get you out of problems or to make media say what you want, this is often used by politicians on my country, so Im wondering, do these happen often where you live, or is something rare to happen or to see?

marc0,
I could not see what country your from to reference, but not too long ago Walmart here in the US got into trouble with the federal government because it came out that they paid bribes to government officials in Mexico in order to get the necessary permits for building and opening stores. The media was in such an uproar over what is considered as morally right business tactics versus doing what it takes for a business to operate in countries where other practices, considered unethical here, are necessary and expected.
As other crap took the attention of the news media, this has faded out of sight and no one seems to be making a fuss anymore about it.
Unless someone travels and does business in multiple countries, I suspect many will not even be aware of what is considered normal and how things differ.

We talked about this in my management class recently, how other countries view certain practices as normal that the US considers ethically wrong.
I haven't experienced any bribes myself here in the US from government/officials.
