How did you meet ?

ouma_adam
Firstly to quickly get this out of the way i'm still sort of new so my bad for not formally introducing myself, hello ! Hope you guys had an awesome long weekend :) But to get back on topic, for all the anime enthusiasts/otaku/gamer couples whom are currently or have been in a relationship in the past, how did you guys meet ? This year i attended my first con (anime north) and both my friend and i were kinda shocked to see how many people actually came coupled up, which proves, there are a lot of female "under the radar" enthusiasts, but i was just wondering where the hell are they all hiding lol ? Because i hear my friends sometimes complaining that there are no "nerdy" girls, but this con proved both them and me wrong. I did join my uni anime club but i hardly have time to go just because a lot of the events are late in the evening and i have quite a lot of extra curriculars too, not to mention i don't live on campus. I'm sort of guilty of not putting out my passion out there too, just because some people tend to right you off as weird because they probably had a bad experience with ecchi being their first exposure to anime lol, and i guess i just simply don't really run into too many people outside of class who even remotely like anime.

Cons are the one place I've noticed a decent ratio of guys to girls in the fandom. Problem is people are so spread out, different ages, different stages of life, etc., what your friends (and I myself) complain about what is half true when its not easy to meet women into similar stuff for those reasons stated above. Cons are a central gathering spot, so its easier to meet new people there on paper. You also have to take into consideration, most people who go to cons aren't necessarily looking to find a significant other even if they're single and girls especially can feel weirded out by too many guys to boot saying dumb shit or paying them too much attention. Its a situation you kinda have to play by ear. If a girl you've never met seems open and relatively talkative, it might be worth investing more time in trying to get to know them. If not so much, its sometimes a sign they're not interested in getting to know anyone new.

Rain, what you said definitely makes sense. While it sounds ideal in theory to meet people, particularly of the other gender at a gathering whom share similar interests, like a con, there are quite a few drawbacks. For one, i've never been into cold approaching, i just always thought it's odd to just randomly walk up to someone, like you said, especially if its a girl they can get weirded out or you might just get written off like all the other dudes gawking over the cosplayers. Not to mention my main goal was to just chill and have fun at the con, but still seeing all those couples, i can't help but find this contradicting trait frustrating, i was like damn wtf lol. Here i am in a setting full of people with similar interests yet, i can't really do much i guess, it's just socially awkward, although a girl did ask a pic of my cosplay which was cool. This isn't to say that i would reject someone who didn't have similar interests, but it would be interesting to share that passion with someone, that con left me wondering just how do other enthusiasts manage to mix and mingle with all these social boundaries.
