@Fran, yeah that is scary. But 5 years means they are hesitant themselves.
People often mistakenly think "I want to die" when they are in a bad place, when what the are really feeling is "I want out of this ______". Out of the stress, the situation, the depression. The want out. And death is the ultimate escape from everything when they can't see a better way out in the moment.
If you really are willing to risk death, isn't there a million less permanent things you can try instead? If you want to escape that badly then just get out and go.
Try taking him out for drinks and asking him just what he needs to escape from?
And I apologize if I'm misunderstanding.
My cousin felt like she wanted to die going through medical school. The stress was more than she could handle. But now she a month to go and is getting married right before graduation. Sometimes it pays to soldier through.

Stay in school. The best thing for depression is distraction. School will keep you busy.
For me it's work. Being around people. Having random conversation. Focusing on the task at hand. It's when I get home by myself that I have issues when I'm really depressed.

You're right, friends and family are the best places for support. But it's not always easy going to them about certain things.
And by asking advice from online friends... Well you never know where some great advice will come from.

My best friend had a history of suicide after literally experiencing hell on earth. She experienced PTSD on a whole new scale, every day afterwards. She just wanted the pain to stop. She spent 15 years fighting it all the time.
So when she was diagnosed with cancer and was given 2 years to live if she didn't get chemo and surgery. She definitely felt like just giving up. And the chemo only amplified that 10 fold.
She was scared to talk to her family because they'd flip out and put her on suicide watch. But she needed someone to talk to and vent to.
Even listening to someone and encouraging them can help, even if just a little.
She beat the cancer and is off meds and doing great now. She still suffers mildly from PTSD, but she happy now and moving forward with life.
She's the single strongest person I know.
Don't give up. Not on yourself. Not on life. Grit your teeth and soldier on. Better days. Happier days will come.
She is a walking charity. She donates all her over time pay to charity. She'll talk to anyone that looks sad. She buy random people coffee or lunch. She talks to soldiers that are over seas. She volunteers her time at the YMCA and other kid programs.
Kindness to others is the best way to heal an injured heart. Doing nice things for others will make you feel better yourself.
