Orange is alright although I do have a few critiques of what it's trying to do.
Firstly is the emphasis on friends having good times by proceeding to flash us with happy smile shorts of the entire group which is not realistic really also kinda makes the expectation for something bad happening pretty clear with the overt smiles and way it's handled.
Secondly I would have to say the usage of the time mechanic which has become a pattern as of late in anime. By all means you can't expect it to provide realistic time logic considering its just a anime buy there are quite a few why did you not do that scenarios. With the journal and overall her future selfs reasoning.
The argument could be made that rezeros main protagonist handles that bad too but that's the entire point with that one.
Overall still good anime though despite my critiques you will be hard pressed to find a masterpiece now and days especially in light novels.

First , No it's not realistic. It's an anime. Expressions are exaggerated on purpose. And what you're talking about is called foreshadowing. They do it intentionally.
Also, people often put on a smile to their friends to hide what they are really feeling. That's what they are trying to represent.
Secondly, time travel is fiction. What realistic time logic is there in something totally fiction.
Also just cause her future self said to do something, it's often easier said than done. If a note from the future telling me my life would be better if I was more out going, doesn't mean my shyness will go away. Having a guide to the future doesn't guarantee success.
Realistically changing one single thing would ultimately make the future totally unpredictable. That would undermine the continued purpose of the note, as well as the writers intentions for the plot.
Which brings us back to, in a work of fiction the writer can rewrite physics and reality however they want.
That critique was very superficial and not well thought out. By all means post your thoughts. But please be careful not to ruin other peoples viewing experience with baseless negative comments.
Exaggerated expressions and scenarios that you'll never see in real life are staples of animes. It's ametuer to judge an anime poorly for not being realistic enough.
Your critique is hardly worthy of comments about masterpieces.
My advice would be to look deeper and broaden the scope of your view. Or make lighter hearted comments.

My personal opinion is that this anime is very artistically done. Both in the animation and in the story.
Conveying real emotion through stories and animated characters isn't easy. Especially not to that extent.

Hmm I had no intent to provide a thorough explanation on my thoughts on the anime. My mistake though for applying critique to personal taste.
Also for not reading the comments since I thought it was a overall thoughts on this anime when in the threads.
As for the reasoning behind said statements I will explain them moreso.
Slice of life is the genre it goes into correct, based on other slice of life anime I have seen the panning to shots or methods to showcase friendship of friends enjoying each other better done is all.
Foreshadowing is a great plot device but for me if it starts to fall into a pattern that's noticeable which isn't necessarily the fault of this anime as it is watching many anime use this same kind of Foreshadowing and growing accustomed to it, then it won't be as entertaining.
As for the matter of time there have been anime that handle it to the point of the character knowing well how to use it or at least getting accustomed to it.
That's more of a personal taste I prefer either the character to know what they are doing with time abilities preferably with growth involved or to have no clue and tend to mess up consistently.
I agree with you in the bounds of the anime that changing one thing or applying realism there could create a alternate set of events completely and deviate from it.
That's true as well the writer has the say so in what happens and what rules are applied but from our perspective we also have the ability to compare what is presented to our ourselfs something that is rather critical to enjoying a anime in the slice of life category.
As I mentioned though this was not a critique just my overall opinion I am not one to thoroughly review animes for the sake of reviewing them. Thereby you are right in saying that I don't have the means to declare masterpieces in a critique sense.
I do enjoy that myself when those expressions fit my taste one punch man and flying witch have quite a few. However if I feel that the anime is trying to convey realism with those expressions and it seems over the top then I may not like it.
I would agree on the art and music along with the voice actors all those are top notch. The faces have a unique style as well that I like.
As I said though it's a good anime not bad the creators really tried to convey some things in it.
This should be applied to everybody including those who have open "and" closed views of their personal taste.
Also agreed most anime will have a very hard time in conveying emotion to that standard but that does not mean we shouldn't look for it.
Thank you though for pointing out some indicators on what was assumed my critique though either way valid.

I see. Well an opinion is one thing, but a critique is something else. Critiques by there nature are supposed to be objective and more encompassing, and have less emphasis on personal preferences. And you yourself called it a critique several time. Which is why I suggested instead giving your opinions in a more light hearted manner instead of calling it a critique.
In this particular case where you're bringing up overly expressed smiles. That's actually intentional. The smiles are fake and you're supposed to have that reaction to it. Because the character are in fact trying too hard to smile in order to cover up the pain and troubles they are feeling. The smiles are supposed to appear forced or unrealistic to the situation.
I was simply pointing out what you were criticizing as over done, was intentionally over done.
And you're right how in a single season multiple anime will share the same themes and styles. I wonder if the companies decide a theme and then see who can out do the others. There've been times I had trouble telling which anime I was watching apart simply cause they are far too similar.
Example being "Rakudai no Cavalry" vs "Gakusen Toshi Asterisk". It's like they were copying each other.
Orange and Re:Zero, though their topic is similar. The stories went in totally opposite directions with time mechanics. And feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but Orange is more of a drama and a tragedy. I don't think it fits into the slice of life category.
Give their expressions a second look taking into account that it's a drama... and supposed to be dramatic and over emotional.
And from a preference stand point, your comments totally valid. My argument was more to the authors intent with regard to the characters expression.
