PS4K and potentially no PS5?

rainx
The days of incremental hardware upgrades and companies treating gaming consoles like the mobile industry treats it's products by releasing new ones annually and biannually seem to be here. Shouhei Yoshida saying there will potentially be no PS5 (if IGN's article is to be believed) as well as this mid console cycle power bumped PS4 coming later this year (aka PS4K) is to me, the beginning of the end for gaming consoles in general. http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/04/20/shuhei-yoshida-reportedly-unsure-if-there-will-be-a-ps5 The one main advantage buying a console has is for one flat price, you're guaranteed at least 5-6 years of support and games where you don't have to worry about buying a new box as well as ease of use. If companies like Sony and MS are going to start releasing incremental versions every couple of years, to me, it almost eliminates the point of buying a gaming console. Yes, on paper Sony has said all PS4 games need to be playable on both the base PS4 and this newer "project neo" model that is coming. But if it's anything like the New 3DS, how long before games just start running like shit on the old model and they'll make gamers need to jump up a few years from now? Hyrule Warriors is "playable" on the old model, but that's not saying much, and SNES games on the 3DS VC? Only on the New 3DS. You'll still be okay for awhile, but there's nothing to tell me they won't slowly chip away at the old model with minor tweaks and annoyances to the point they can discontinue manufacturing it and force existing PS4 owners to upgrade to the PS4K. Frankly, after reading everything I have on it in the last few days, I traded my PS4 and bought a Steam box. I'm PC/Nintendo for the near future and going forward. They're going to need to show me these incremental upgrades aren't going to torpedo the old boxes before I invest in another Sony or MS console again.
