Online Relationships

What are everyone's views on having relationships online (meaning you don't know the person IRL)? and what are everyone's experiences?

Had a few in the days of IRC, doesn't seem to go far unless you can meet. It'd be nothing but heartache as you can only make a connection by voice, vid, and text, and you will start to yearn for more. (that is until we can have VR tech like SAO, then that will fix everything) In short, not fun.

Not worth the trouble unless you're near each other or one of you moves. People(typically women) will continue to get hit on and receive offers from more local folk. They're going to repeatedly be faced with the task of choosing between the person they know online who's hundreds of miles away, or the person that's standing right in front of them. Eventually they'll cave in and take what's available there and now. Best part about it is it's not uncommon for them to say nothing about it to the person they're seeing online and lead them on for a while. After all it's really easy to lie about and hide an offline relationship from the people you only know online.

It's pretty risky. You got to be really strong to keep one up and have to deal with the fact you probably won't be able to y'know, do all that romantic stuff together. And speaking from experience, most people lose their feelings for that one person after a while, so it really is a miracle if it'd work out. Plus many people could fool you like, many doods just wanted to mess with me instead of having a normal relationship. <.> So I'd recommend you get to know that person well enough and not just rush into things.

Ive been in a long distance relationship for over a year now. We actually managed to meet eachother after a few months, and then one more time after a few more and now we are meeting again..its so awesome despite all the sadness of physical absence of eachother. Yes its very difficult. But if both ends want, it will eventually work somehow.. ps. Tons of patience and trust is needed. Neet she indeed does get hit on alot, she tells me. But shes still with me and she hasnt gave up nor she will. She lives in boston, usa i live in greece ^^
