@daggerfall and BlueRose The difference is that you see all countries in Europe as divided. They are all seperate countries, but if you would close the borders it would be like closing the borders between New York and Pennsylvania. If you close all the borders, it would for instance become very difficult for all the German students who happen to study in the Netherlands, which are quite a lot to be frank. Closing the borders seems like a straightforward answer to the problem, but this would cause a lot of problems by itself again. Not to mention the fact that we would give up our freedom to travel arround Europe because of something terrorists are doing. We'd be playing right into their hands, which seems like one of the least favorable things to do to be honst. Then again, I'm not coming up with any solutions here either.

Europeans can easily unite, you saw this several times in history, including the crusades. Also, defending Europe for thousands of years against the Islamic invasion, and various caliphates during that time. I'm talking about mass deportation. Most of the Refugees are coming via Turkey, shut off access routes and sea lanes across Greece and Bulgaria.. The problem would be solved. It shouldn't effect the European Union one bit, all they have to do is agree on a strategy, but the types of politicians in power now... will only get worse.
