Like most things in life, I feel like this definitely falls in the different shades of gray category. Ultimately, so long as you do your best to not make decisions that you will regret, then it's all good in my opinion.

I agree that right and wrong is a morally grey area. I eat all the food I can possibly stuff into my mouth when lunch is free at work? Is it wrong of me to be such a glutton. Maybe. But how can I be expected not to turn down such a treat?
In your example I think it would be fine to skip out on a funeral if you don't owe them anything. It's a sad thing when that scenario has to happen.

I'd say in a way, yes you wrong. For example, I hate my father. He did parenting the wrong way and I always thought he wanted me to study so that I can get a well-paying job to support him when he's old. I personally hate him so much that I wanted him dead. But that doesn't change the fact that I am still in debt to him. Whether he wanted to or not, he had to take care of me. And as a person who hates having to owe other people, I still have to pay him back and attending a funeral is a show of respect. You need not cry but being there shows enough.
