While escapism can mask the pain until you can get it off of your mind you still have to address the issues eventually. You have to own your feelings and understand where they come from so you can deal with them and move on. A little isolation is fine if it is just to center yourself but do not brood or self-deprecate like this or it makes it worse usually. Friends and family can be a potential source of support. If you are the loner type get outside and go someplace interesting. Also certain foods in your diet can help get your metabolic energy level up to help push you along. Now if you have depression that is beyond the norm you need to get evaluated for clinical depression and treat the cause. Don't let the counselor be lazy marry you to the pharmacy, get multiple opinions.
My best friend I have known for almost 25 years now tried to kill himself multiple times to escape his depression as younger man. Over time he became increasingly withdrawn and an anti-social hermit escaping into MMOs. I was his roommate for a few years to keep an eye on him. Since Jr. High became obese, sleepless, and was bald as captain Picard by 19. They put him on a few high power meds but they only helped one or two symptoms and he still felt terrible as the years went on. He obeyed his doctors diet and exercise plan to the letter and he only could lose ~50lbs and plateaued in progress for months which made him even more depressed. He moved out of state for a job and his new doctor solved multiple issues with one remedy.
His doctor took him off all the brain candy drugs and put him on hormone therapy because his testosterone (TS) level was that of a 90+ year old man. His baldness was dismissed as a family trait that was common in males from his family but the doc put 2 and 2 together with his workouts plateauing and sleep issues and no sex drive + intermittent erectile dysfunction. TS governs multiple metabolic and psychological functions. He got an injection every 3 months and after a year loss 100 lbs without changing diet(still good diet) and minimal exercise. He says he has not felt so good since childhood. Because he got things kicked back into gear he might not need more hormone therapy but they are still evaluating that. You have to find/make the doctors work for you to find the answer instead of lazily prolonging the problem to subsidize the pharmacy.

I tried escapism like anime and video games but I started feeling like I wasn't being productive and felt guilty about it. I started to exercise more and picked up a hobby I could feel like I could improve slowly over time in, which was sculpting. I think since it was mostly hands on to form and mold clay I felt like I was in complete control of the craft, which I needed since I mainly felt I wasn't in control of my own life. It was just as relaxing as anime and video games were for me but afterward I could take a step back and see what I accomplished with my time spent on it. Also it doesn't hurt to talk to someone about it, there are people out there that will hear you out.

I watch anime, play video games, or listen to music. I also take medication. I also think interacting with people and going out of the house helps too. I have multiple disorders though so I might be a little different.

Man I have chronic depression from time to time. I usually talk with friends, hang out, game, write, listen to music or have sex. (Last one really helps because of the cuddling, I love me some cuddling)

I draw - I do it for a living but I also do it to relieve stress. Walking around helps too - until I realize people are outside.
