What about thrillers? Well I'm making one! Currently, it's postponed until next year, but I'm halfway to my goal for raising funds for it! Spread it around as any share or donation helps! http://www.gofundme.com/projectflux ~T

Probably start off with at least a pair. And I need mics and sound equipment and a better desktop computer.

A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE BLACKMAGIC. It literally comes with nothing. Just the body You'll have to manually download the 4k raw update. It's god awful in lowlight. You'll have to invest in SSD(which are pretty expensive considering RAW has large files and you'll need drive with large space ) You'll need an SSD reader.

Not saying it's a bad camera, though ~T

The new Blackmagic cameras have nice features for the price. But I'm also looking at the Samsung NX1 which is the first camera to have H.265 codec with 4k which is great for saving space, and fantastic video autofocus (actually usable in some situations) with an aps-c sized sensor for decent low light. The only issue is the expensive lenses if I want to use any autofocus. Yeah I know filmmakers hate autofocus but a few very recent cameras have such insanely good autofocus with touch screen focus pulling, it's a shame not to take advantage. Also I have an interest in photography. Other cameras with good photo/video capability include the Sony A7S with external 4k (getting a bit pricey) but better low light than a 5D MKIII: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1044728-REG/sony_ilce7s_b_alpha_a7s_mirrorless_digital.html Or the new Sony A7RII: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1159878-REG/sony_a7r_mark_ii_digital.html My inclination is to start out with the Samsung and adapters for various manual focus lenses, then add a native autofocus lens when I have extra money and later get a couple of Blackmagic cameras. But it's not worth making plans for current cameras very far into the future because so many new cameras keep coming out. Panasonic has some great cameras out too, but again you have that issue with smaller sensors and light issue which is an issue for me with photography. Really though it's not worth overthinking when it comes to equipment (I have that habit), creativity trumps everything in the end. No shortage of reasonably popular movies made on crappy cams. I figured I would start of with a few documentaries to get my feet wet and get used to editing. Then I have an interest in making a film version of a somewhat obscure book I like. Also there are other books I would consider translating into movies just because I hate how Hollywood often does it.

Also a digital Bolex would be fun to play with if I had the money: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1135048-REG/digital_bolex_14074_d16_cinema_camera.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjwzPSrBRC_oOXfxPWP6t0BEiQARqav2EPq1Kw4_Jd4s0OW1CcUee6mn32PbsSI81hmY1NzjZcaAgtJ8P8HAQ
