Differences between 90's & 2000's

robscene
From one decade to the next, there's always visible changes in fads, technology, beliefs ect. What does everyone remember being different from the 1990's compared to 2000 to 2010? Security is one thing I remember. Back in the 90's you and your family could follow whoever had a plane ticket all the way to the gate and watch them get on the plane without traversing a maze of people, get blasted by x-rays, be pat down by security and you didn't have to take off your shoes.

That's true, with the security thing at USA airports. Umm, I actually kind of have a hard time distinguishing between 90's and early 2000's, so I might make some mistakes... I remember Polly Pockets were available in stores in the 90's, but not longer in the 2000's or later... Man they really need to make them again, they were awesome and neat toys for kids, but no, they decided to turn it into a fashion thing instead of a miniature doll-house thing. :( Though I admit I liked the fashion Polly too, with the rubber clothes... I think most of all I liked the things like cars and houses for them. I just really loved dollhouses and miniature furniture. I remember Tamagotchi being popular as a kid, so that was probably in the late 90's. I only had one, but it was an 8-in-1 type. Oh yeah, can't forget about video games... I remember Gameboys, SNES, N64... but I only ever got non-nintendo consoles in like 2007 or so, a used PS2 slim.

In the 1990s if you wanted to talk to someone you still more likely had to call them land-line and hoped they were home. You had to go hang out in person as fewer had internet access. I think people were more social and better connected to one another than they are today in spite of modern social media. Remember pagers and cordless phones? 2000s did not bring the end of the world but it was the beginning of the end of what sanity it has left I think. Political correctness and propaganda went fully off it's leash. We all know about the war on terror and how that worked out. Cell phones got awesome. Roller-blades come to mind for some reason. 2010s will be defined by extremism and narcissists largely I fear. I hope it brings better mobile computing and leads to a new age of discovery and scientific breakthroughs.

@Darku Oh yes, the communication thing is really true. Actually it continued into the early-2000's too, at least for me. I can remember when I first started playing MMOs, I would get all pissed off from the phone causing the slow-ass dial up internet to disconnect. It also took close to 30 minutes to start up the 3D MMORPG I was playing at the time, which now takes less than a second to start. Other than that, the biggest change I can really notice is the music. I don't know if it's just me, or my area, but rap and hip hop suddenly became huge around 2000 and later(all my classmates/friends seemed to had converted instantly between 5th and 6th grade), while pop music like Britney Spears, Spice Girls, and N'sync was most popular in the late 90's. I really miss when the "happy" euro-dance music was sorta popular in the 90's, songs like the "Around the World" by ATC. Stuff you'd expect to hear on DDR I guess. Now dance music seems to revolve around clubbing, sex, drinking, etc. :( PS: Thanks OP, now you've gotten me on a eurodance music video-watching spree. XD

The 90's were when it became popular for men to shave all their body hair, the "porn star" look as it was called but long hair on your head was still popular. Then well into the 2000s the hipster culture brought big beards and hairy men back into popularity, the "lumber jack" look as it's sometimes called. But it's also more popular to have shaved or short hair now vs longer hair in 90s. In the 90s baggy Tripp pants and big skater pants like Jnco Mammoth and Kangaroo were popular. But then into the 2000s the emo/scene culture made skinny jeans popular. (The "lumber jack" look could be seen as sort of the fashion antithesis of the emo/scene look also). In the 90s if I wanted to hang out with a friend, I called them on the phone. Now everyone uses facebook or texts on their cell. In the 90's everyone was still scared of AIDS but figured it was mostly only gay people in big cities or Heroin addicts that were infected. In the 2000s there are enough treatments that most people aren't really scared anymore but everyone knows anybody can have it (but never expect anyone they know or fuck to have it). In the 90s X-Files was cool, now everyone thinks Supernatural is cool, but I still like X-Files way more and consider it vastly superior. I think Supernatural is hokey. In the 90's hokey was a commonly used word, now most of you guys may not know what hokey means or just haven't heard it in awhile. In the 90s being goth was still cool (in a rebellious way). But all the old school 80's goths hated the Tripp wearing, Marilyn Manson listening, skater goths because they weren't "real" goths. But the news media called them and Marilyn Manson types "goth" anyway, which the old school goths figured gave them a bad name and that all these new so called "goths" were idiots. In the 2000s the new emo/scene kids essentially became the new wave goths and most of the 80s goth kids have kids now and gave up their fashion/lifestyle and the 90's goths mostly became metal heads and are doing the same, many with kids and a regular (boring) life now. In the 90's you could rent a studio apartment for $300 or a 1 bedroom for $400 or a 2 bedroom for $450. Now a studio is like $450 and a 1 bedroom for $550+ and a 2 bedroom for $700. In the 90s my first job bagging groceries paid me $4.35/hr in 1993(minimum wage was $4.25). Now I work at a hotel for $11/hr (minimum wage is $9.25).

The 90's had better western cartoons. I miss Ren and Stimpy.

Speaking of animation, remember how many CG animated movies there were in the 90's? Yeah, me neither. Then came the 2000's and everything was CG animated. A lot of that could be said of special effects for movies in general.

Well, one main difference is one starts with a 1 and the other starts with a 2.
