Oh yeah there was an article I read about that. They would dress the corpse up and have them sitting in a chair or something, or even with their eyes open, to make it look like they were alive... I think it was because of how expensive or difficult it was to take photos back then, where you had to stay still for several minutes. So most people never took family photos until someone died.
