Being a die-hard firearms nut I would go with something typically found in anime like Noir, Cowboy Bebop, or Black Lagoon. That being said I'm a huge fan of the .45 ACP and the 1911 Pistol Platform. The thing is there's a lot of other non-1911 .45's out there. Aside from the 1911, there are very few .45's that really fit me and my handgun grip style: Sig Sauer P220 Equinox, Sig P250 Compact Threaded Barrel for Suppressors, Springfield Armory XD45, or the FN Herstal FNX-45,. One of those weapons I'd roll with in an anime with a more modern (or near future) setting (It's kinda hard to describe Cowboy Bebop like that, but Spike's IMI Jericho 941 is uber sexy). And, along with that, the Finnish Sako Rk.62, Finland's design of the AKM with a lot of major improvements, including an ability to perform in almost ANY conditions, including in extreme cold with the accuracy to boot. Something that not even my personal favorite assault rifle, the AKM, can boast. But, I'm also a huge fan of snipers, so I'd also go with something along the lines of a Parker-Hale M85 or a UK L42A1, or if long-range stealth was paramount, maybe even a McMillan Alias CS5. If we're talking close-quarters (the type of combat I suck at the most), generally, a traditional-stock semi-automatic or assault shotgun with a short 14" barrel (or shorter) would be ideal. In this case, I'd love to use a Saiga-12 with a 10" barrel or an Atchisson AA-12 Assault Shotgun. And, let's not forget that shotguns and the many different kinds of shotgun ammunition allows them to be adapted to be used in many different ways. But, if I were to go with a more fantasy-ish route (honestly, I hate high fantasy or really fantasy in general), I'd actually go with a weapon straight out of the web manga series I'm writing: an indestructible hollow metal Bo-style staff that can manipulate sound waves and to a lesser degree, air density and resonance. Using such a weapon allows it to be flexible and dynamic in combat and can be used both as a melee weapon and as a long range weapon through either utilizing manipulation of air to create a certain single or range of frequencies both audible and inaudible to the naked ear as a means of offense or defense, or using the resonance of the staff itself in a similar manner. The staff could also create a sonic wave or sonic boom. In addition to all of that, as a form of physical defense, the staff would also be able to resonate at certain frequencies to stop or cancel out an incoming attack, whether that be ranged or not. We know that sounds at a certain frequency can put out fires, what about stopping a projectile or pushing people back? Stealth is also taken care of since the staff can create frequencies that are inaudible to the naked human ear. The only disadvantage of using such a weapon would be using it in tight spaces. Bo staffs generally are around 5.9ft/1.8m long, so using such a weapon in a hallway only four feet wide with a seven foot ceiling obviously would not be beneficial. But yeah, being a gun nut I'll just stick with the only thing I was only ever good at, and that's shooting. I just bet that most of you have never even heard of the Parker-Hale M85 (it's the rifle that lost the UK Military trials in a very controversial manner to the Accuracy International L96, or some of you may know it's other name, Arctic Warfare). I just don't really like "plasma" or "energy" weapons or fantasy weapons all that much, as they never really appealed to me, and I'm not a huge fan of melee weapons either.
