Walls

There is a still upon the night<br> Bathed in shifting pale moonlight<br> No saint or sinner buried here<br> Just fallen walls, tier to tier<br> <br> Walls built here to grim effect<br> Some ancient folk could not protect<br> But serving now in fallen state<br> Remind me I’m no island state<br> <br> Each time we seek protective walls<br> Life can cold hard towers mall<br> Walls protect but also kill<br> And can the soul sometimes chill<br> <br> Friends can topple walls so grim<br> And let the peaceful healing in<br> Some think well to walls appeal<br> But fallen walls can also heal<br> <br> Healing comes from gentle prying<br> Friends shield us from slowly dying<br> A friend indeed is a friend to heed<br> A friend indeed I will always need<br> Jim Cooke
