Your thoughts on the derogatory word: Otaku

sassyspark
Did you know, being called an Otaku is considered an insult in Japan? I've notice that many people that use to refer to themselves as Otakus are now taking offence to the name. That's because they just found out that Otaku was considered an insult. But, Otaku doesn't just mean obsessed with anime. It can be really anything cars, dolls, movies, and a bunch of other things. I personally already knew that Otaku was considered an insult because I've been reading Princess Jellyfish for quite awhile. But, I really still love being called an Otaku. Learning that is held a negative meaning never really phased me or changed my mind. I kind of find it like being called a nerd or a geek. I know that it is considered a derogatory term. But, it's my choice to accept it or get insulted. Anyways what's your opinion on being called an Otaku?

Its only derogatory if you let it. Dont worry what others think about you, and "otaku" wont matter.

Otaku is a very vague word when you think about it. However if you are ok with being called it and associating yourself with the group that it covers then by all means accept it.
