I've seen clips of the Clannad dub, it was okay. But I personally watched it subbed, as well as Lucky Star. I'll ONLY watch Yu Yu Hakusho and DB/DBZ/GT dubbed. In my opinion the dubs are better than the original. The Gurren Lagann dub is decent too, I have it on DVD which contains both versions, not sure which I prefer, both are good. ._. There's probably two or three other dubs that I can admit are good. The rest though, ugh, god no, awful. .__.

Code Geass and Fruit's Basket were good dubbed IMO And I watch some anime dubbed when watching it with my sister (since she doesn't like reading subtitles since they go too fast)

I usually don't watch any anime dubbed except fma. I prefer vic Mignognas voice for Ed over the sub. Besides that, I'm not much for dubs.

Lately I've gotten so used to watching subbed anime that dubbed just seems wierd after and reading subtitles are second nature now plus I'm slowly learning Japanese.

Ergo Proxy and Ghost In The Shell I find to be more gritty and better dubbed.

Your friend could be like my sister and just has a hard time keeping up with subtitles. Or maybe he/she just doesn't necessarily like Japanese voices much Or also like my sister, if you're reading subs, you too focused on that and miss what happens in the actual scenes, so actually being able to understand it you'll be able to watch it. Or if you need to look away, you can still understand it. Granted my sister still watches subbed anime sometimes, like Naruto and Bleach But like Vamp said, watching anime dubbed seems weird after having it subbed for so long

I watch the first episode dubbed if its available so I get a feel for the show. If I like it then I switch to the Japanese sub. Although, I do agree with @asrid_nara I do prefer Vic Mignogna's Ed.
