Cthulhu Fhtagn!

H.P. Lovecraft, anyone? What's your favorite story of his and why? Mine is "The Outsider", due to the deep sadness of the story and the beautiful twist ending. While I'm at it, how about that Edgar Allen Poe? Isaac Asimov? All those wonderful, legendary short story geniuses? Anybody?

I don't think I would be able to pick favorites. Too hard of a choice!

Well, then name the top ten. ^^

I'd have to come out and admit to being a cultist now that there is a topic up. HPL is my messiah...

So happy that you made this thread :) I've been an H. P. Lovecraft fanboy for the longest time lol The Outsider is a great one! There's so many great stories to choose from but right of the top of my head I would have to pick The Music of Eric Zann, Herbert West: Reanimator, The Dunwich Horror, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, and The Colour Out of Space

Oooh, "The Music of Eric Zann" was a good one! I love the building panic and the sudden darkness of the climax. It's not every writer who can make a room with the lights out seem that breathtakingly scary. I haven't read all of his works, I'm afraid, but I've been a horror and science fiction short story fanatic for a while. I got started with Poe and then Asimov, and a few years ago I finally sat myself down with a few links to transcribed Lovecraft stories and decided to see what all the fuss was about. Needless to say, I fell in love, haha. Poptimus, you're not the only cultist on the map, I promise you. ^^ While I'm not a die-hard believer in the Cthulhu mythos, I'm definitely a fan of the writer who dreamed it up.

Exactly! The suspense and the sense of foreboding you feel while reading "Herbert West: Reanimator" is just amazing. I highly recommend it if you haven't read it already. I feel like he could make you feel anxious and scared just walking down a street. And he has!haha I know of Asimov, but I'm not too familiar with his work sadly. Here's a site with a majority of his work if you're interested <a href="http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/"_blank">H.P. Lovecraft</a>

Sweet! Thank you so much! I am aware of the basic plot of "Herbert West: Reanimator", but I haven't read the actual story. It's been on my list of to-reads for a while though. Asimov is one of my favorite science fiction authors due to his attention to scientific detail and his rather offbeat sense of humor. One of my favorite short stories of his is "Nightfall"; it's about a planet where the stars are seen as apocalyptic harbingers of madness due to the fact that the suns only set once every thousand or so years. It's very thought-provoking and makes one rethink a lot of popular science fiction *cough*Tatooine*cough*. http://www.astro.sunysb.edu/fwalter/AST389/TEXTS/Nightfall.htm

Sounds exactly like something I would read :) I'll be sure to check it out.

He's also written some amazing books. His "Foundation" series is very unique and inspiring, and is the reason why some people have referred to him as the J.R.R. Tolkien of science fiction literature.
