Went last year in november, 1400$ for round trip ticket and a hotel room for two weeks. Flight was out of an airport in New Jersey, 14hrs there 12hrs back no stops, only thing I would have changed is I would have made it first class tickets, thats a long time cooped up on a plane and the extra room in First class would have helped with that. I brought 800$ in yen for spending money and didn't spend all of it even though I was trying by the end of the trip. I stayed in Tokyo and got around by train/subway/bullet train. Went to Harajuku and Akihabara two times a piece, hit a couple different temples, arcades , tech stores, anime stores, anything that looked fun really. One major piece of advice, bring good walking shoes as I ended up walking a MINIMUM of 10 miles each day. All in all I had a great time, wished I could have stayed longer. Now I can't wait to go back, and I'm not sure I'll be coming back to the states this time.
