Strange murders are happening in Tokyo. Due to liquid evidence at the scene, the police conclude the attacks are the results of "eater" type ghouls.

In an alternate version of the present, Tokyo has been decimated by a shocking terrorist attack, and the only hint to the identity of the culprit is a bizarre video uploaded to the internet. The police, baffled by this cryptic clue, are powerless to stop the paranoia spreading across the population.

The film follows a swordsman with no name and a golden-haired assassin as circumstances draw them towards a mysterious young boy. Hunted by the Ming from China, young Kotaro and his dog meet a nameless samurai ("Nanashi") who is haunted by memories of his past which have led him to avoid drawing his sword ever again.

The suspense horror/dark fantasy story is set in Tokyo, which is haunted by mysterious "ghouls" who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery.

In the year 2022, the gaming industry has reached a new height after the development of the NerveGear, a helmet-like controller that allows the user to fully dive their senses into the world of virtual reality. After a closed beta with only 1,000 testers, the Virtual Reality MMORPG Sword Art Online is launched.
