I think that's because she was left to her own devises. The only way a person like that changes is if their way of doing things fails to work for them. Of course in Esdeath's case, she dies when that happens. Interestingly she wishes to be with Tatsumi rather than continue attacking. Contrast that to the prime minister who continues to fight to the very end. I think after that last fight when she was bested her motivations changed.

I get what you're saying. But it's exactly because she pursues strength that I think she might have dropped down to a 9/10 on the merciless scale. When an individual like Akame or Tatsumi comes along and challenges or surpasses her power, she has a choice. Reevaluate how she sees strength to become stronger or be stuck where she is and stay limited. I didn't say she'd donate to the red cross, but I feel she'd have killed one or two less people. lol She was shown to be rather kind to people she favored.

That's what I meant. You can only crack heads for so long before the novelty wears off. I was thinking had Tatsumi actually been with her if she might have mellowed out a couple of millimeters. Have a slightly more open interpretation of strength.

I can't help but wonder if she began searching for something else other than just battle. It would explain her feelings towards Tatsumi.

I don't think she was quite bad. Just twisted. The kings advisor was bad. Esdeath was just warped. I think had she'd been with her lil lover-boy she might have been slightly less twisted. Certainly not a goody two-shoes. But softer for sure.
