It is really crazy, it used to be on netflix instant, but they made it a disc only, it is up on most anime sites though to watch. There is a movie version of the series but they cut out the complete ending story arc, and some major characters.

Hello again finally sat myself down and saw "Grave of the fireflies". it was a good movie. sad but good maybe not one you'd watch over and over again, at least for me, but its one to definitely see at least once. kind of how you said it was.
