Having a hotel makes things a little easier in regards to being able to put things there after you've bought too much to carry, and a place to change if you plan to dress up (and decide you're done with the cosplay for the day). I haven't regretted ever getting a hotel room. There was one year I slept in my car, but I don't think I'll ever do that again.
