Leviathan is written by Scott westerfeld and its set during and alternate timeline for world war 1 between the British who are Darwinist (they use genetically engineered animals for everyday stuff) against Germany who are clankers (they use machines). The main characters are Deryn a girl who disguises as a boy to join the military and eventually crosses paths with Aleksander the sole remaining heir to the austra-Hungarian throne that was taken over in a coup d'tat. whew wow that was a lot to text on my phone had to breeze through it.
