They can't go back, that's true. At least they were fighting evil and making the world they were left in a better place. If they weren't in that world things would have turned out badly. Like you also mentioned also-the brothers also have each other and it seems that is all they need. Did you see the other movie too, The Sacred Star of Milos?

Yeah, one and the same. I thought it was cool that it linked with the main Fullmetal Alchemist story line but was self contained at the same time. In the movie's world there are counterparts for many of the characters from the Fullmetal Alchemist world. Fritz Lang resembles King Bradley to a large degree but their personalities are very different. Interesting way to turn everything on its head.
