How much would it be to upgrade my current list to a bit more update parts?

Just get a better graphics card then. Everything else, such as newer CPU/RAM/MB etc. would be a waste. I'm serious. You could get a decent Nvidia for probably 100-150, some of their suggestions are good. The CPU/RAM/MB combo I suggested is good because you're getting server grade parts, ECC RAM is necessary to help prevent data corruption. For the record, upgrading to Skylake would give maybe 3% more performance at the same clock and cost about $400 more to get the same class of parts.

So you suggest keep everything on the list but just get a better graphics card in? And again thank you all for your help. I feel so clueless when it comes to hardware so appreciate it.

Yes, I am saying exactly that. Its not worth spending extra money on something that's only going to benefit you like 3-4% in terms of performance. The biggest advances with Broadwell and Skylake, the later versions, are in the graphics dept, which Xeons have no graphics chips.

Would that set up be able to handle Nvidia GeForce GTX 970? http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?N=100007709%20600536049&IsNodeId=1&Submit=ENE

I'm waiting just a bit for the next generation of video cards for a high quality VR setup and 4k gaming.

^_^; Sorry for being a bit slow on this but I am really grateful for your help and want to make sure I get everything right.

VR and 4k gaming are both novelties right now designed to justify high prices. Give it 5 years, and it'll be less gimmicky and more pragmatic. For the record, I don't see VR taking off anytime soon with the likes of the Oculus Rift being an underwhelming POS overall.
