Weight Loss after surgery

mushishi
I was wondering if anyone has any weight loss tips? I'm in that dreaded area of "I've lost some weight, but now I'm at this weird point where I can't lose anymore." So, here's my story. I was on the heavy side going into surgery, 178. I'm really active and had been walking about 2 miles a day and was really on a role, then I need to have surgery (laparoscopy). I'm still active, though I've been told to settle down by my doctors, so, I'm not as active as before (for now). Does anyone have any tips for after surgery weight loss? Especially my stomach area (where I had surgery) I know I'll never be tiny, but, I want to be healthy and happy. Feel free to be blunt.

I thought this was about what to do AGAINST weight loss after major surgery, haha. Well, I actually got shit genetics in that regard and hence my metabolism sucks. What I did was going on a full vegan diet and cutting out sugar out of my diet. Not gonna lie, the only reason I have sugar in my kitchen is because I love cocktails and always add a bit of brown cane sugar to my Mojitos. Result was me losing weight (I never was overweight though.. Just didn't feel comfortable in my skin before), my nails and hair becoming more healthy and my skin clearing up completely (cutting out sugar was probably the cause). I also feel more energetic and strong. Though I would recommend taking baby steps. And if you really can't imagine cutting out flesh and dairy out of your diet don't to it permanently. Just try it out. I personally never thought I could live without cheese. I fucking loved cheese. But I tried and it was no problem at all. As far as activity goes, I do workouts to get a lean body rather than a muscular body. Recently I've been doing TayTay's routine on YouTube: http://youtu.be/kUuJ_IY-lwQ It worked wonders for my waist and my legs. (My arms have always been in tone to begin with) And I love going swimming. It's great cardio, doesn't put pressure on your joints (I'm tall, so my doctor said jogging would harm my joints.. Swimming doesn't) and works all of your body at the same time. And you don't feel sweat running down your back... A feeling I hate with a passion.

The lean body workout looks awesome! I'll have to try that once I fully heal. Yeah, I did gain a bit after surgery (I'm 180 now), though I've never been a small girl to begin with. Meat I can do without, my main problem is sugar and dairy. I love cheese also, but, sugar is my main weakness. I don't eat out, except for maybe twice a month and I always get cheese pizza (my weakness)

They are! Taylor actually also has tutorials for certain areas of your body. So you could for example do this workout 2 times a week and also add the tummy+waist workout onto it and do cardio once a week to top it off. For me these videos are really great since I'm pretty much a weakling and these workouts to do not require a lot of strength. I'm not exaggerating when I say I can't do a single push-up.. Which is just sad so I'm trying to change that. (As a girl/woman you don't have to work your muscles too much but having a bit of body mass is also good in case you have to deal with douche bags or are the type who asks her bf / stronger gf to open up jars for you... Which I am very much guilty of, haha). Cutting out meat completely would already be a very good step. :) don't pressure yourself to make huge changes in no time.

Sugar is my weakness, you guys would be amazed. I just have a fast metabolism. But I do want to improve my diet and actually have a 6-pack. I'm still what most would call skinny but I'm not anorexic emo boy skinny anymore like I used to be. It's just that I tend to be in situations where junky foods are more available and exercise difficult (particularly winter months). I plan to join the local YMCA after I buy a car again. I've also started eating more omelets instead of sugary cereals. But I still drink too much soda and chocolate milk, need to work on that. If I ever had a gf that I could workout with, it would be great. But for some reason I tend to date bigger girls that don't. (more available since skinny fit girls tend not to be single very often unless they want to be)

The main thing in regards to eating is really portion control. You don't have to cut everything you love out of your life, but just limit yourself so that you don't go overboard with it. Also I'd advise you to consult your doctor regarding dietary changes such as cutting out meat and whatnot. And if you do, please research on it and make sure you still get all the nutrients that you need. Many a vegan I've seen in the hospital and getting medication from me because they went about it bad and got anemia, which is actually a really serious disease state. Also you might want to talk a physical therapist who can give you some basic workouts or techniques you can do while you're recovering and whatnot

^^^ I agree with that 100%. Make sure you still get everything your body needs and if you can't cut something out... Don't. But control the intakes. The one thing that sucks about going vegan is that I have to constantly keep check that I eat enough. Though it's not that bad for me due to my metabolism. I don't need as much nutrients to survive and stay healthy as other people do.

What do you find is a good source of protein in a vegan diet to replace meat?

Peas, beans, nuts, quinoa, chickpeas, Tofu... (Though I hate plain tofu.. Even if it's in a salad. So I always try to somehow cook and/or prepare it), spinach, sesame and sunflower seeds, soy or almond milk, hemp, oats, broccoli, asparagus... There are a lot of things. Being vegan not only means cutting out meat but all animal products... So at first one does feel pretty lost. But once you get used to it it's pretty easy. I purposely didn't mention any actual meat or cheese substitutes because that shit is really expensive sometimes.

I sometimes confuse vegan and vegetarian. I don't necessarily believe a no meat diet is always best but I do believe that the way modern meat is processed with all the hormones and poor diet of farm animals is likely bad for us. I can't do soy milk, tried it once, couldn't get the horrible taste out of my mouth fast enough. I haven't tried almond milk. I need to try (flavored) tofu.
