Keeping Your Love for Anime a Secret

blueskybreeze
My parents know I watch anime, but what they shouldn't know is how much I watch. I don't think their little hearts could take it haha. But my best friends know and I know they don't really care or mind. And in response to neet-one I occasionally wear clothes with a symbol from anime like the homonculus symbol from FMA and the scouting legion symbol from Attack on Titan for the same reason to see if I can draw out someone who is familiar with it. Sometimes it works haha

I suppose there was a period when I was 10 and watched Card Captors for the first time where I was sort of in the closet of what I watched, since my friends thought it was crappy. But now, I can't say I hide it. I love myself and my hobbies, and hell, I even drag my dad in from time to time to watch anime with me if I think he'd like it. I think that might actually be the best way to explain it to your friends and family. Like don't force them to watch it, but just sort of be like "Hey, you like game of thrones, right? Dude, there's this really neat show called the "Heroic legend of Arslan" set in a psuedo Persian-like kingdom. Sit down with us and check it out! Here, have some popcorn! We're watching Attack on Titan next!" And bam! If they want to sit around and watch the next episode, you've done the anime industry some good.

Nah, why should I be ashamed of what I like? If they dislike just for that, they aren't my friends.

I've never felt the need to hide my passion for all my geeky passions, I've never had to keep these kinds of secrets. A part of that is because my parents are geeks themselves (Even though my dad is a car nut and my mom is into all the the supernatural stuff), they're into games and anime and stuff like that and I've been growing up on this kind of stuff. My mom and dad used to sit me down with stuff like Dragonball Z and what-not when I was little and the first game I ever played were Doom and the original Super Mario Bros. thanks to my dad showing me to them at such a young age. I mean my parents are the ones that got me into games like Silent Hill which we adore. Anime and gaming have been a huge part of me from pretty much birth. There will always be twats out there in the big wide world who will judge you for the things you like but honestly, who cares what they think? Fuck that noise! I've always expressed my passions as a huge positive rather than a negative that people feel the need to hide. Even back in my school years I was one of the biggest geeks in my year, but I was the loveable geek that everyone knew and I could get along with pretty much anyone and everyone because I was sociable and confident in myself and the things I love. People loved me for being me and I'm proud of the things I love.

I hide it in social situations. When people ask me what t.v. shows I like I just say Game of Thrones, because it's more socially acceptable and I do like the show. I might thrown in some subtle hints or probe them to see if they like anime. Only then will I carefully explain how I like anime too. Instances of this are few and far between though. I haven't discussed anime in real life with anyone outside of an anime convention.

I keep my secret from society cause either they get confused or they will judge me for liking anime. My family knows I like anime and they don't care about it. They sometimes find it interesting to listen cause its different.

I am not a weeaboo in public, but I do tell people at college I love anime Often, I insert the story and themes of an anime in an academic situation I referenced Honey and Clover when we were watching Chinese youth dramas yesterday in class. I know its Japanese, but anime is extremely popular in China

I mean I have an anime character tattooed on me and do a fucking podcast about anime and anime culture. That being said I don't hide it but I don't bring it up around people who wouldn't be interested.
