Well, it's taken out of of context. The whole point was for them to charge in to take the initial assault so reinforcements could come in to take the fort. They knew what they were getting into but their commander charging in while they were pinned down and then getting gun downed gave them the drive to complete their mission. They had been sieging the fort for days prior to that charge.
