Filipino Belief: Some people who over-appreciate others don't really give a sense of appreciation inside. Some people's words, although seems good, really hold negative energy and sometimes there's really underlying hate or jealousy. Sometimes, when people tend to over-appreciate someone, some spirits who are vengeful hear it and would get jealous too, and so they would tend to harm people. So it is common here to say "Buyag" (Evil spirits stay away) whenever praised or appreciated.
