To be honest just think of it like this if you do nothing you gain nothing. If you want to meet people for a relationship you have to make an effort even if it's a bit awkward try talking about things that may interest you both whats the worst that could happen.

I want to have lots of friends so I send friend request to everyone but I'm shy so I don't talk with them unless they start, then I'll talk with you for hours.
