Agreed, one of the iron rules to writing is: "the closer you apprach to reality, the more specific you have to be." So when something is described unnecessarily, especially when it is fictional in nature, you write yourself into a corner because you have described something that must be consistent with the rules you have imposed. A great example is in Star Wars. The force doesnt exist, so anything that was said about the force was just accepted as fact, and we moved on. When they introduced medichlorians they brought it closer to reality and esablished that some people simply weren't as gifted as others and it ruined the majesty, and imposed rules when it was unnecessary to explain.
