Also @OP: I'd definitely recommend Ushio and Tora if you haven't watched it already, from what you described that might be just up your alley lol

Shinsekai Yori, a sleeper hit from 2012. Psychological, dystopian, philosophical, and sometimes scary. The plot does a kick ball change around three times, and somehow becomes more enthralling each time. A slow starter, though. https://myanimelist.net/anime/13125/Shinsekai_yori?q=shinsekai%20yori

AnoHana, the anime that made me cry the most, and will most likely may you cry too.

@OrangeMilk seconded on this. From time to time, I rewatch the last scene and somehow still cry. Those last few minutes leave a lasting impact, even without immediate context.

@komi_anime_when? (Goes to rewatch that scene) Yuup! I still feel the welling up in the pit of my stomach when I rewatch that scene! Memories!

@OrangeMilk That field scene in Clannad:AS has the same energy. I didn't cry at any other point in AS, except for that.

I usually don't like romance crap but I just watched Kare Kano and I enjoyed that quite a bit.

@我が心は明鏡止水 I usually read the manga after watching the anime if I like the anime enough so yeah I know the manga is way better xDD.
