I've really only played the first Shin Megami Tensei on the PC Engine. It was pretty fun, but I don't care for first-person dungeon crawlers that mjch. I also played a bit of Persona 3, and... well, that has Roguelike elements, which is my other least favorite RPG style; so I dropped it partway in. Persona 5 looks bloody fantastic though, and I actually really want to play Genei Ibun Roku #FE.

Definitely Persona 3 & 4 if you like a more VN style approach alongside of the RPG elements. Persona 1 & 2 are also great, but the gameplay is pretty dated. Didn't age so well. SMT:Nocturne is also pretty great, and the Digital Devil Saga games are worth a look. Though, I must say I absolutely hate the dungeons in DDS. The atmosphere, characters, and gameplay are fine. The dungeons are just so annoying to traverse through for me.
