It is also worth noting that that apart form the visual style that distinguishes anime from Western animation is that anime also uses less frames per second than western animation does.

One thing to consider though with long running series is that it is entirely possible for a series to be too long. I am a fan of short to medium series and if a series runs too long it runs the risk, in my opinion, of getting boring. Companies I think are pushing for longer series and not realizing that somestimes it's best to let a series end.
Popularity and budget does play a part in it because then you end up with series like Guilty Crown. Good series, good premise, cut off too soon and rushed at the end.

I'd say no, if nothing else I've watched a lot of older anime that have gone on for no more than 12 or 13 as well, in fact I've seen new anime that has come out in the past few years that are still ongoing. I'd say its just your imagination 10-13 episodes seems to normally be the sweet spot for the mass majority new and old. But then again who cares, the mass majority of people are too stupid to even be capable of using grammar properly, so I doubt a company even thinks the majority of the public can notice shrinking episode numbers. If I was a producer of a popular product I'd do the same thing, take advantage of stupid people.

MOst anime with more than 13 episodes is more than just pushing a story ...
but Toys / figures / model kits ...
LIke people who watch Transformers buy Transformers...
I watch Gundam and buy Gundam model kits ...
People who watch harem anime buy the figures n stuff too
Anime which exists purely for the story or plot don't happen as often as it used to ...

Also depends on the story. Some series like Erased already told their story and it ends perfectly. We don't need more.
It's what separates anime/manga from the countless changes and reboots from comics. There can never be one final issue of Batman. He just has to keep going in some way or another.

I don't believe anything is wron with new anime, so long as we don't get a really good one that's only like 13 episodes. Other than that, I simply believe anime is evolving into something New and in my opinion just as good. I don't like when hipsters talk about "old anime" as if it's the end all be all. If that were the case, it would never get any fresh ideas. Without that, what are we to do? Watch dragonball clones and inyuasha remakes ( not that either of those shows are bad) if we wish to hold on to anime? End rant. Sorry guys, I didn't mean to go off like that. I'll leave now.
