Lufia

I've been playing through this on my SNES and I have to say its a pretty tragic game. I especially think the translations are good, none of the 'Engrish' you can find from this era of game. Its compelling, but seems unknown among SNES gamers. Its certainly better than the Final Fantasy games of the same era. I just can't get into pre-FF7 games as much, and FF7 has its own aggravations.

Ah, yes, the Lufia series was amazing in its heyday. Unfortunately, the long delay after the second one kinda killed the series off for me. None of the later games met the quality of the first two, and the second hiatus before the release of the DS version didn't help matters there either. Better than the FF series, especially of that era, is definitely subjective, though. I do have to say the Ancient Cave in 2 did eat up a lot of time for me, though...

Yes Kyoko. I actually own a Famicom II/ AV Famicom and I've modified my SNES so it will play Super Famicom games. I've been learning Japanese, so having a JDM library is nice.

Lufia, that's an obscure one, I thought I was the only one who played it! It was an awesome game, but I loved the SNES Final Fantasy games, so I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that part. The modern FF's are a different story though. Worst use of my time ever...

Final Fantasy has been a series I've tried to get into for years but had trouble with it. The older ones don't feel as nice as Dragon Quest and Phantasy star and other contemporary JRPGs. The English translations sucked too.

Perhaps, I did really like Phantasy Star, and Dragon Quest I've never gotten into. Bit I'm a sucker for an epic story line. I think FF6 had an epic story and there was so much depth with the characters. Phantasy Star was another RPG with a great storyline, and the sci fi setting let it really stand out. I don't know Japanese so I can't really comment on the translations though. So perhaps you're right on that account. - Oh, and Shining Force for the Genesis was a hidden gem from that generation for me. It got me hooked on the genre.

Shining force is awesome. Its just the names, and the awkward translations seem to cause the issue.

Maybe, I usually had to play them on emulators, and I played most of them later in life. When I was a kid I didn't own many games. So usually I just assumed that's just how early games were.

I don't play on emulators. I am a purist, and use the original hardware when possible. Emulators feel wrong to me. The only exception is computer emulators because the old computer hardware can be ultra unreliable at times.
