Personally, I think the choice is up to you. But,let me play as the devil's advocate here for argument's sake: what's the career trajectory for a copy editor vs. an artist? With regards to future career switches, how easily can a copy editor transition to an artist and vice-versa? From my experience, in some publishing companies one of the copy edit's job responsibilities involve art formatting, text style, news design etc. You won't be asked to draw a painting per se but it's fair game to be tasked to ensure that font style and copy design are consistent/look professional, so there is a bit of art sense involved there.

Not all the time, some career choices are fun even if that was your hobby prior to that.
I watch this all the time every morning when I wake up before I do anything to remind myself why I am up in the morning. I work out with this sometime on loop..It's so true, and no matter what career you choose this is true.

It's true that you can still make your hobby into a career without losing any passion for it. I have many artist friends who work as artists professionally who still really enjoy their work. I think it's just a matter of finding/creating a situation that's suitable for you. And there's such a huge variety of jobs an artist can get that can afford comfortable living. I have friends who work at game/film companies as artists, a friend of mine opened a small art school while doing commissions and gallery work on the side, her business partner also does architecture drawings, my sister in law does illustrations for children's books.
Ultimately you just gotta go with what you feel comfortable with and figure out what you ultimately want. Who knows, meister 24 is right, you could even find a job that compromises between the two

A bit or some art is fine. I know exactly what copy editing entails, I'm not by any means going in blindly. I have family in the business. What I'm saying is I, PERSONALLY, don't want art as the FOCAL POINT of my career. I've had a taste of what it feels like to be an artist professionally but it just wasn't for me. My art is mine, I've done full galleries and sold things not gonna lie, but it's still was mine. Selling it, getting paid to do works and etc....no. Not anymore. But the pressure that's being put on me makes me second guess myself. I would be miserable on an scary level with art as my career but then people keep saying "well if you get paid well enough...." It's not about money, never has been. Never will. Like, do I want to be one of those people who do it cause of other people? or say fuck it and do what I've wanted to do for years even if I stumble along the way? I mean I've dedicated years of college (and will with another several to get my PhD), my majors (English lit, journalism, Japanese and pro writing) and turned down a full ride to a great art college for being a copy editor! my ass is locked in I thought!! BUT even showing my dedication level, I'm still being told "it's not too late", the pressure is that real. I fucked up and showed a professor at my last college some of my art cause he was at my senior exhibit. Next thing I know I'm being dragged to the art department where I spent an hour of someone trying to talk me into changing my major.
I'm 21. It's not too late but why cant I get people to understand that I'd rather be editing papers and books all day than paint and draw for a living?

You know what you need to do, so stick with the choice you want to make for you. It's your life and your career. It's unfortunate that people around you can't or won't accept your choice.
If you enjoy making art for yourself, then continue to do so when you want to, for yourself. From your own description you would get burned out if you moved into art professionally, which will affect your creativity, and lead to your resentment of your choice and your own art.

You seem to know what you want, I say go for it.
I recommend anything over art since you value it as a personal thing over a business/service. I know I do too.
Don't let others boss you around. Many people have parents saying to be this or that, and go against them, and usually end up much happier by following their own wishes. Others can be selfish and want you to do what they think is good, but this is something for you, not them. It shouldn't be any of their business.

I don't see why you can't do both -_- Just because you concentrate on one for income doesn't mean you can't do the other on the side..
In a case like that you're making use of both talents..

Career choice is essential for happiness, I believe if you are passionate about what you do it can be a positive influence to yourself and the people around... Go for the career that you dream for. I have a couple of interest of what path I should take but will always follow the path that makes me the least miserable... I'd hate to work in a cubicle solving math problems as an accountant like all the movies, shows and stories I have heard, I much rather run around trying to save passion as a kindergarten teacher than work in a depressing environment. I hope mine, and others opinion persuade you for a better choice.
