Locating people closer to my age\how to get past the barrier of nervousness?

I get by nervousness by just not thinking which has usually lead me to say stupid things but if they don't like me because of that they wouldn't be good friends to me anyway since usually when I talk it's serious, about one of my hobbies, or a really bad joke that most likely relates to anime.
