Unlike previous series in the Gundam franchise which are set in the "Universal Century" timeline, Mobile Fighter G Gundam takes place in an alternate "Future Century" universe. Within this timeline, much of mankind has abandoned a ruined Earth to live in space colonies.

In the year 0079 of the Universal Century mankind has left from earth and live in many space colonies. When all was peaceful a family arose trying to take over and rule over the space colonies.

The story revolves around Sei Iori, a young Gunpla Builder and student who has a dream of becoming the best Gunpla Fighter in the tournament and someday become as good as his father. Seven years after the events of Gundam Build Fighters, the rules of Gunpla have been renewed, and the sport becomes even more popular. However, one academy is left behind in this change, and that was Seiho Academy, which Sei Iori once attended.

The confrontation between the Earth Alliance (Naturals) and Zaft (Coordinators) originated in economic trouble had reached an impasse. War couldn't be stopped by that point, and thus this story begins one year later when Heliopolis, a resource satellite belonging to a neutral nation, is suddenly attacked by a Zaft mobile suit force.

Gundam X is the story of the survivors of the Seventh Space War who try to eke out a living within the ruins of their civilization. "Vultures", scavengers of war material and ruined cities, roam the wasted Earth.
