When Okajima Rokuro (aka <i>Rock</i>) visits Southeast Asia carrying a top secret disk, he is kidnapped by pirates riding in the torpedo boat, <i>Black Lagoon</i>. Although he thought he would be rescued soon, the company actually abandons him, and sends mercenaries to retrieve the secret disk.

Michiru Kita is a special girl who possesses Shinigami Eyes, a power which allows her to see a person's proximity to their destined death by seeing a ring, invisible to normal people, around the person's neck. When a person is marked to die, a gray ring appears, which darkens over time.

Since Hiro Hiyorimi's parents died, he and his sister Sawawa have lived apart. Now, Sawawa has gotten a new job as the caretaker of a creepy old mansion, and has sent Hiro a letter asking him to come and stay there with her.

The series follows Dr. Kenzo Tenma as he pursues a young psychopath/sociopath named Johan, whose life Tenma had once saved.
