So I made this thread before, and I assume it never posted because it is entirely impossible that a site frequented by otaku dont have a single other mech pilot in its ranks. Seriously people, prattlefield and call of dookie? I thought we wore the cultural highbrow in these circles, not the lowest denominator backwards cap? So! Anyone here play the newest installment of THE frachise that inventet E-Sports, fostered the term "Clan" for used with online gaming communities, and can brag about an average player age of 40? I refuse to believe I am the only one hardcore enough on this site to be into this... And if that really is the case, then I am truly saddened by the ignorance of "my people"...

I've been hearing that Mech Warrior Online is mediocre, according to the community and critic reviews going on for the Open Beta. I'm not sure if bragging about an average player age of 40 is a good thing...

Battletech has some REALLY passionate fans, and that is most likely the biggest understatement i could make. "we" are way more highstrung than the FF7 crowd, and more zealous than the spanish inquisition. This have a few effects on the "revies" available on for instance metacritic. First and foremost there is the issue of "betrayal", the Battletech IP is old and have fans that have followed it since childhood, ANY and ALL alterations to the game is an atrocity to these fellows, fanatics some might say, as obviously you cannot retain copy/paste rules from a turn based strategic boardgame when transitioning to Real time piloting. The inability to adjust to the newer platform was evident in EVERY single itteration of Mechwarrior in the past aswell, every time a new mechwarrior game came out "core fans" were in an uproar, this latest itteration have been anticipaated for well over 10 years and as such the burning emotions connected to it have set aflame the most opinionated, causing a terrible overall score. If you have ever read an actual review of a game this becomes obvious within few minutes spent on metacritic. In addition, most of these fans now have children of their own, but the newer generations tendeancy to get bored easily have led to some these children NOT embracing the "faith" of their parents, this in turn has caused MWO (mechawarrior online) to suffer under the "modern gaming conventions" such as focusing on instant gratification and easy access. (the ability to use a 3rd person camera drone is an especially hot potato) If you do not have anything invested into this franchise i couldnt imagine you would find it lackluster on anywhere near the same level as the Closed beta participants make it out to be. Alright that more or less covers the negative "reviews" part of my post, i could litterally go on for page after page but if you are really interested in that side of the story, go to the official forums and have a look for yourself, it is the most inhospitable place on the internet that i have ever encountered... The actual game is friggin awesome (if you are into giant robots blasting the everloving crap out of each other that is). It is a hybrid between a typical FPS (you aim at stuff and shoot it, hide behind cover and try to flank your enemies and move on them without being noticed) and an RTS where you cant control your units directly, only give vague instructions. The appeal for me lies in the fact that it very much CAN BE a thinking mans shooter, your mech weighs in at between 20 and 100 tons, bigger is of course slower, to the extend that if you are driving a 100 tonner and you make the wrong decision its very likely to be the end of you in that match, unless you have a skilled team to back you up, see these mechs arent exactly nimble, as an example lets say you are behind a building and decide to walk around the corner to go down a street, turns out this treet is filled with hostiles approaching... deccelerating a 100 tons going 50kph takes a few seconds, kicking it into reverse takes another few seconds, then you spend that same amount backing up behind cover again, all the while you are an almost stationary target, granted the immense armor plating of a 100 ton mech lets you take a pounding and survive for a while , it even affords you to make mistakes (note that the art of piloting a mech is so comprehensive that bad decision and mistake isnt the same thing), but move too slowly and your individual parts are that much more easy to hit, the enemy might take another 2 or 3 seconds to aim, blowing out you ammunition storage or a particularly nasty weapon you might have equipped somewhere. Being in a really fast little bugger, you can afford alot of bad decisions, but you cannot afford a single mistake while the enemy is watching as your armour simply wont stand up to a barrage from a 100 ton mech. It is hard to quantify but the things you take into consideration when customizing your mech (once you rise above the "regular" level), is far from the cosmetic option that a traditional "RPG class system" becomes by comparison. And I do very much believe that the younger the fanbase of a game is the worse it is, however a game that has retained fans from childhood to parenthood and passed on to the next generation is very much a respectable franchise. Think about it, out of all the things your parents were/are into, how much of it do you even give the slightest of craps about? I suggest you try the game and base your oppinions not on anything i have said here nor anything any other "old douchebag" have said about the game. But before you do drop into a real match... take your time in the training grounds and explore the controls options, the tutorial is horrible, i wouldnt bother with it. just log into the training grounds and start experimenting, If you cant figure out the control scheme and workings of your mech by practicing like this, no amount of tutorials and guides are going to help you achieve in this game. I love it because it is a game that allows for talent and ingenuity, there is NO such thing as "The best mech", "the best weapon", "the best dps combo" or anything of the sort, anyone claiming that WILL never surpass veteran level (not an ingame measurement, there are no ranking system that is visible at all), simply due to the fact that their mindset is limiting them from achieving their full potential. I would love to go on and on and on and on about this but i figure this wall of text is bad enough already. please feel free to ask me any and all things you want, as a Warrior of Clan Wolf, I am well qualified to provide insight into the methods of piloting, gunnery and how to conduct honourable combat.

I have nothing personally against the Kuritans or the Draconis Combine in general. Actually you guys are one of the few groups that occasionally accept honour duels from us Clans. I do think I actually Dropped with/against you before, name sounds familiar.

lol man its funny as i find myself at this very moment playing Mechwarrior online. I wish the clans would be introduced already and its too bad factions dont have a role just yet in the game

yeah the game is a bit small atm, but considering how little time they have used and the size of their team, I for one am impressed with what they have made so far.

I used to play Mech Warrior 4: Vengeance, online a lot, wasn't even aware that they had a new game out I might have to take a look at it considering I've been a fan of the franchise for quite a grip.

Stop by the NGNG "outreach" TS server to find people to play with, as this is very much a teamwork oriented game. I can sometimes be found idling in the Clan-Wolf channel down towards the bottom.
