College Major

thecomingdarkness777
By start of the fall I'll be a college junior, yet I don't really know what I want to major in. I like creative writing and wanted to become an author since I was little but, I don't want to major in English since most English majors become teachers and I hate teaching. Can you tell me how you all chose a major also can you give me some advice for choosing one?

I'm currently on Japanese major, and I'm thinking about apply for interpreter or teaching Japanese on school. I don't like teaching either, but I would do it for the money. Lol Honestly I wanna choose Fashion Design major but my parents thought it wouldn't work. Many people didn't success on the job from the major their graduated tho. For the advice, I think you should choose the major that you like it or good with it, a friend of mine had dropped from Japanese major coz she didn't doing well much.

I just want a job that's interesting and pays well lol. I don't think I'd be a good teacher since I hate talking to an audience, even of kids, plus grading essays are a pain. I considered computer science but it's a major that you have to be accepted into like all other enginering majors at my school. My gpa kinda sucks since I didn't adjust to college life easily (not used to having classes that seem to pack a years worth of info in one semester). So I'm leaning more toward the college of liberal arts for majors.

I don't want to do anything really (on a regular basis). I want to wake up every morning (or afternoon or evening or whenever I wake up) and be like, "What do I feel like doing today?" That has always been my dream. My other dream is to be an immortal 12yo loli assassin but they don't have classes for that. I majored in Computer Science but dropped out after a year and a half. I only went because my parents wanted me to go.

@Dark777 Well, me too, I get nervous everytimes I have to do a presentation in front of whole class. Lol If you like writing, why don't try something like columnist?

Never knew what I wanted to do originally after my dream job got smashed to pieces. My Uncle stepped in and guided me down the music route. I'm only at BA (Hons) / MA level so far :) I make music and record bands in super cool recording studios :P My advice is to think what you most like doing and make it a career (even a hobby as when you are working it won't feel like a job so much) :)

I'm actually doing English and History join honours, though I expected to do English Philology but literature isn't bad either (ironically I get better marks in History lmao). I also would like to be a writer (specifically a screen writer) but I'd do any job after I graduate to keep some regular income since in creative writing not guaranteed I'd get paid plus my family doesn't like my dream job and I don't want them complain and send messages. I'm not planning to be a teacher since it doesn't simply fit me, there are reasons, but I asked academic advisor about job possibilities and they told me that writing is a great skill and is favoured in many places. Uni is good with giving advices and volunteering stuff, I don't know about college but I hope this helps. I'd just say choose what you like and try everything that your school offers to find your way. I'm still searching and trying.

DO NOT. I repeat. DO NOT get a creative degree. Get a degree in something that has real world value and do your writing on the side. You can't write if you are broke. Trust me. Do not spend thousands of dollars on something you will not make money on. Btw I minored in creative writing. I have an art degree and it took years before I got a decent job (not in game design like my degree says). I regret not getting a practical degree every time I think about it. The thing to realize here is that you don't need a degree to write. None of the great writers in the world went to college to write better. They just did it. Get a practical degree you can use to make an income. Trust me, you will regret it if you don't.

I agree with @Arc, get a degree that can play in 2016. You can minor in your passion, but don't spend $50K on a degree that won't make that in salary. If anything, get a Business Administration or Communications degree. Those aren't great, but they're broad enough to get a foot in the door eventually. You can always write on the weekends ;)
