There was once a sly fox that lived at the forest's edge bordering a small village. She was no ordinary fox, however. A hundred years ago she was worshiped and feared as a goddess, and rightly so, because she had the power to turn into a human. She enjoyed tricking foolish men by imitating the woman they truly desire. She created chaos to amuse herself, ruining families; even so much as creating wars over her, the fox goddess. Eventually the people grew tired of her to the point of trying to kill her. She escaped into the woods and was forced to live the life of an ordinary fox in solitude for the next century. She became angered one day when a farmer wearing a black hat encroached on her sacred land and tilled up her hunting grounds. Angered by this, she sought revenge. Every night after he went to sleep she would take to the fields and destroy. Sometimes she would kill one of his sheep. Other times she would stomp on the budding crops. Much to her surprise, this did not deter the farmer. He knew of the "curse of the fox". One evening, instead of returning to his home in defeat, the man dropped to his knees and cried, much to the happiness of the fox peering through the grass. The man openly begged into the wind that the fox show him mercy. He had lost everything in the city. He had spent his fortune on his wife who was suffering from a disease that required expensive medicine, and she died when he could no longer afford to take care of her. He begged the fox to show mercy on him. But this was too fun, she thought! She figured she would continue to play with this man that now accompanies her in the forest. She bit the ankles of sheep and continued to step on his crops. The next day, the man walked out to the middle of the field. At this time, he would beg the fox for mercy like the day before that and the day before that. But today he just stood there. His expression was hidden under the rim of his hat. Eventually the man took his hat off and stared up at the sky. He then left the hat in the field and returned to his house. The fox had fun again that night. The next day the man did not appear. 'Why didn't he come out today?’ the fox wondered. The fox peered through the window and saw the man curled up on his cot. She didn't feel like playing that night. The next day the man did not come out again, much to the fox's dismay. She waited all day long for him to appear, but he did not. http://hdwallpapergirls.com/assets/large/anime-girl-pink-hair-wallpaper.jpg As night came she examined the man's hat which was abandoned in the field. She could feel from it what the man desired more than anything. The fox closed her eyes and took a human form again; the shape of a beautiful young woman. She sneaked off to the city and stole some clothes on a clothes line. Still holding onto the man's hat, she opened the door to his house. The man, still in bed, forced himself up to look at the woman now standing in the doorway. The man, still in bed, forced himself up and noticed a beautiful fox girl standing in the doorway that looked very much like his recently passed wife. The moonlight painted a glowing white line around her hair, and he was in awe. The fox girl noticed that the pillow beside the man was stained in blood. He was noticeably weaker than he was the day before, but she never saw him this close up. “So, tonight the fox goddess graces me with a visit.” He laughs, but interrupts himself with a cough. “I suppose you can see now why I was forced to encroach on your home. I, too, have become sick. Perhaps I was able to control my condition until my loving wife had passed. Have you come to see me off?” The fox girl replied with a gentle smile. She walked over to his bed and rested his head in her lap, stroking his hair. She let the man caress her soft cheek. “I am so happy right now. I can see my wife right before I die,” he coughed, “and I will see her again after”. The fox girl watched as the man fell asleep. For some reason, tears came down from her eyes. She wiped them away and gently rested his head down on the pillow. She picked up his hat, which was resting by the bedside, and tucked it under the man’s folded hands. Backing away from the man, she took the shape of a fox once again, and dashed out of the door into the night. As she reached the tall, pale grass, she turned her head and looked at the farmer’s house once more before disappearing into the brush.

Thanks for reading sunflower ^_^ Bittersweet endings are my style. When I saw the picture, this is pretty much what I envisioned. If you look into her eyes, you can see the sadness in them. At least that is what I saw.
