Because yokai or shiki bite people and turn them into one. I finish watching shiki today. Can't really say who is wrong but somehow get bloody.

Don't like the priest and yes the doctor is likable. Is the manga different than the anime one?

well the anime actually came out first and had the ending of the novel, the manga ending is totally different
