Choosing what to like.

I always seen the act of blindly following the prevalent narrative to always be quite close-minded, regardless if the Idea seems good and progressive, ironically the entire act of following an idea without questioning it; is as regressive as one can get. At-least by my personal belief.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with liking things someone shared with you or something a lot of others liked. I think to a large extent that's how the whole Brony fandom got started back in 2011. The opposite side of the coin with that would be more of a "hipster" like attitude towards not liking anything mainstream or not liking something a vast swath of people enjoy. That in turn also has a bit of a hypocritical and/or negative connotation to fact some people feel those "hipsters" only hate things because it is popular and/or are also just following the now "cool" trend of hating on anything mainstream and only liking indie, underground, or lesser known music, shows, games, whatever media, etc. Frankly, at the end of the day, who really gives a shit? Enjoy what you wanna enjoy and who really cares how you found out about it? If people hate on something you enjoy and/or are in turn hating on you for liking said thing, they really have way to much time on their hands if your enjoyment of something is affecting their lives in some negative capacity. That, or they're just bored trolls trying to get a rise out of you for attention sake.

I usually like stuff other people don't like much. I remember one time my aunt bought me shoes when I was a kid and I didn't like them. Then my uncle grabbed them and I was like maybe I want there's shoes. I bought those big lug shoes in high school. I liked them because they were weird

I've tried things other people like, to give it a chance, but as far as what I actually do like? Nah. I like what I like, and if someone else doesn't then it's none of my business. If I could convince myself to like things just because other people did, man, I would be way into more things than I actually am, lol.

Well, it probably safe to say the lot of us didn't start liking anime because we were trying to fit in. (o_O )

I don't think that's safe to say one bit. There's tons of posers/hipsters who only pretend to like anime. It's an easy way to fit into a group and give yourself an identity in a more and more isolating world.
