Overused Powers

Agree with saverak. Power application can be more important that the powers themselves. Take having fire powers as your own example. Look out how Avatar the Last Airbender took elemental manipulation, and tied it into martial arts, making it fresh and exciting.

"Plot armor/being a Mary sue"(yes this is a super power): this includes being able to make friends with everyone/anyone. Always having the best solution to any problem, always having the right thing to say, anyone of the opposite sex is only interested in your MC, nothing bad ever happens to them and any injury they suffer be it physical or mental only serves to make them tougher and sexier. It's boring, it's cliche and it screams "wish fulfillment" "biggest number" : ANY ability like super strength, super speed, super big ki/mana/energy/stamina/haki/nen/chakra/etc. "Pool" where your character just has the biggest number stat in some field or they are so super "talented" that they pick up on things instantly and can learn anything right away. They are like a character in a video game you used game shark on. They are just so strong that nothing hurts them. Watch One Punch man to see how this plays out. There' no tension with them. "Elements": Unless you are SUPER confident that you can put an original spin on it try for something more creative. "Weapons warehouse" The ability to summon weapons/animals ad infinity it dumb. For pretty much the same reason as the biggest number. My advice? Don't worry so much about the powers themselves because everything has been done pretty much but instead focus on HOW those powers are used of maybe come up with creative weaknesses and complications. Such as how Midoriya has One for all but because his body can't handle the immense strength he has to be careful how he uses it. Or you could try for a unique combination of abilities. Use a random super-power generator. FOR EXAMPLE: I just put a 2 power mix in and got "liquid body" and "magical tattoo". So I decided(this is with maybe a minute of thinking tops so don't judge too harshly) on a world where people have magical tattoos that grant them special powers. Each person has a unique mark. And a main character that has an abnormality which can turn her body into liquid. She has no special powers of her own besides this but because of it she can change her "magical tattoo" ink into other's shapes and use their abilities instead. Albeit not as well as them. I need to workshop it but you get the picture. Anyway like the background, powers should serve the story. Specifically the story of the person wielding them.

it sounds like your story is one of growth and maturity seeing the world through the rose tinted glasses of a sheltered home and then being thrown into a world that doesnt actually care about you what is the mentor like originally? what sends them over the edge? it must be something big if they were normal before hand despite being faced with murdered comrades previously idea? maybe the monsters are these hulking things, but on one mission they see one that is oddly human and thats what sparks the mcs curiosity as to what these monsters even are and it turns out that that one was a human not fully turned into a monster (if you did like my corruption idea above)

I like the idea of the more monster they hunt, the more deranged one can become. It seems like something that I could work with. As for her mentor, I think her running into a monster that killed a close friend would be a good way to send her over the edge. Her mentor is a highly talented hunter after all, so it wouldnt be hard for her to start becoming corrupted. Maybe the organization can even cover up this aspect.

PIS is the most overused broken power. Just don't make anybody invincible and give consequences actual impact.

Thanks guys. I think I'll be able to make things interesting, especially if I put more work into the power system itself.
