Would free condoms handle prevent teen pregnancy?

kichigai913

No, the health department already does hand out free condoms. I'd imagine teens would see it as embarrassing, but I had no problem buying them from stores as a minor.

It would help, but ultimately what will do the most in lowering teen pregnancy rates is education. Sex education in this country is sorely lacking. There's no common standards for sex ed even throughout a school district so it can vary from school to school, much less on a more macro scale. And even if the school district does teach it, only 13 states in this country actually have legal standards requiring that the material taught in sex ed classes be medically accurate. And then only 6 other states require that sex education must mention contraceptives. Most just outsource out to abstinence only programs that are notorious for being scientifically inaccurate and religiously orientated. We spend more time teaching kids how to say no to sex than we do teaching them about contraceptives.

Yes, (although I will admit this is anecdotal) my grandmother was once school nurse at a private school back in the 60s and 70s. Teen pregnancy was a huge problem and the administration did not really know what to do. So my grandmother bought a bunch of condoms and hid them in the bowl of candy and students were allowed to just take them. Of course by the end of each weekend she would have to refill it, but eventually the problem of teen pregnancy on campus was no longer an issue where she worked.

Condoms are cheap and a kid is not. Go buy the condoms. It will save you.

There are actual studies that show that proper knowledge and availability of condoms indeed helped in curbing the rates of teenage pregnancy through the years, BUT free/easier access to condoms is just one factor among a whole host of others that determine risk factors associated with teenage pregnancy. Note that all preventive methods are more or less, flawed. Birth control pills and morning after pills are not 100% effective either. It still depends on the body of the woman, period of intake, etc. I think the most effective birth control method is implants or IUDs. Condoms, however, are still the easiest birth control method to procure, so having it on hand is one step to being careful.

J is correct, as far as the US is concerned, Planned Parenthood & Health Departments give out free condoms. I'm sure it helps to an extent but there will always be people out there that refuse to wear them or people who don't care if their partners do wear them. I like to refer to both those persons as SKANKS. XD
